A stump left in the ground gets in the way of everything you might want to do with that part of the garden. Grinding takes it out mechanically, below the surface, without digging up the whole area to get at the roots.
How stump grinding works
A grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to take the stump down in layers. We normally go 150mm to 300mm below ground level, deeper if you are laying a base or replanting in the same spot. What is left is a hole filled with fine chippings that can be topped with soil and turfed straight over.
Why grinding beats digging it out
Digging a stump out means excavating the root plate, which usually means machinery on the garden, a much bigger hole, and disturbance to anything nearby. Grinding is quicker, tidier and far less disruptive, and in most gardens it is the only sensible option.
How deep do we need to go?
It depends what happens next. Turf needs less depth than a patio base or a new tree in the same position. Tell us the plan and we will grind to suit it.

Access and tight gardens
Our machine fits through a standard gateway, so most back gardens in Barnsley terraces and semis are reachable without lifting anything over a fence. If access is unusually tight, measure the narrowest point and tell us when you call.
What we leave behind
The chippings can stay and be used as mulch, or we take them away and leave the hole ready for soil. Either way the site is raked over and swept before we go.
