Cutting at the right time
Timing matters. Most broadleaf work is best in the dormant season. Some species bleed heavily if cut in spring, and a few are better pruned in summer. Nesting birds are protected between March and August, so we check before starting.
Doing it properly
Bad pruning causes more problems than it solves. Cuts made in the wrong place leave wounds a tree cannot seal, which invites decay. Topping a tree flat produces weak regrowth that is more dangerous a few years later than the original problem. We cut to the collar, take a sensible proportion of the crown, and tell you if what you are asking for will harm the tree.

If a tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area you need consent from Barnsley Council before work starts. We will flag it if we think it applies and can talk you through the process.

Can I cut back a neighbour tree overhanging my garden?
You can generally cut back to the boundary line, but not beyond it, and the cuttings belong to the tree owner. If the tree is protected you need consent first.
What is the difference between reduction and topping?
Reduction shortens branches back to suitable growth points and keeps the tree healthy. Topping cuts everything flat and leaves weak regrowth. We do not top trees.
When is the best time of year for tree work?
The dormant season for most species. We will tell you if yours is better done at a different time.
How do I know if my tree is protected?
Barnsley Council holds the register of Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas. Ask us and we will point you to it.
Do you clear up afterwards?
Yes. Brash is chipped, logs are cut and everything goes with us unless you want the wood.
Can you tell me if my tree is dangerous?
We will give you an honest assessment when we visit and tell you if it needs work, monitoring or nothing at all.
Do you work on large or roadside trees?
Yes, including sectional dismantling where a tree cannot simply be felled.
